October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

October is breast cancer awareness month where we dedicate time to show increased awareness and support surrounding this disease. Whether you personally suffer with or know a loved one who had or has breast cancer, or are simply trying to prevent/stay more informed, there are ways that you can learn more information and support the cause.

Breast Cancer Risk Factors

A risk factor is anything that increases your chance of getting a disease.  Two more common risk factors that affect your chances of getting breast cancer are:

Common Risk Factors include:

  • Family Related
  • Aging
  • Reproductive History
  • Dense Breasts
  • Prior Radiation Therapy Treatment
  • Genetic Mutations

Less common risk factors include:

  • Excessive Alcohol Usage
  • Being Overweight/Obese
  • Lack of Physical Activity
  • Not having Children
  • Not breastfeeding
  • Birth Control
  • Hormone Therapy after Menopause
  • Breast Implants

Early Detection/Prevention

About 43,600 women are expected to die from breast cancer in 2021. Breast cancer can be found after symptoms appear, but many women have no symptoms at all.   Therefore, regular screening is essential.  In many cases regular checks could be a life saver.  Different  imaging tests such as Mammograms , breast ultra sound, and breast MRI are ways you can prevent breast cancer and detect it early.

How can you help spread awareness this month?

The National Breast Cancer Foundation has many resources that you can do to help support the cause such as donations, partnerships, and fundraisers. NewGel+ is committing to donate 5% of our Breast Cancer Awareness Promotion sales to Breast Reconstruction Awareness! Also, if you have a unique story or want to show your support on social media, use the hashtag: #breastcancerawarnessmonth!
